BORACAY – Better port facilities will encourage more cruise ship companies to include in their destination list the province, particularly this island resort, according to Gov. Florencio Miraflores.
Miraflores said he is optimistic that the cruise tourism in Boracay will thrive, especially when the island attracts more cruise ship companies.
“Improving the facilities in Caticlan and Boracay ports will be good for cruise tourists,” Miraflores added.
When cruises make port calls in the island, tendering is being observed.
Tendering is using small boats – called tenders – to shuttle passengers and crew members from the ship to the island.
Ships cannot move too close to the shore because the water is shallow, thus the need for tendering.
But tendering can be dangerous, especially in a bad weather. If the waters are too rough, a cruise might be forced to cancel a port call.
On the other hand, two luxury liners carrying about 14,790 passengers and crew members are scheduled to make port calls in the island this December.
One of them is the MS World of Dreams with a capacity of 6,000 passengers and crew members. It will dock in the island on Dec. 13 and 20.
The other one is the MSC Lirica with a capacity of 2,790 passengers and crew members, which will dock in Boracay on Dec. 25.
The Department of Tourism (DOT) already recorded 12 cruises from January to Dec. 5 carrying over 32,000 passengers and crew members to Boracay.
Port calls made by these cruises positively affect the local economy. Each cruise ship passenger or crew member visiting the island spends averagely $140 for their food and beverages, transportation and retail shopping, DOT said. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
