Antique receives P1.5-M food production facility from DA

ANTIQUE – This province received P1.5-millon food production facility – a greenhouse with hydroponics – from the Department of Agriculture (DA) Region 6.

The facility is located in Barangay Badiang, San Jose.

DA-6 executive director Remelyn Recoter led the recent turnover.

Hydroponics is a method of growing plants indoor without using any soil. Instead of pulling mineral nutrients needed for growth from the ground, plants get all of their nutrition through a nutrient solution supplied to their roots.

Sangguniang Panlalawigan member Fernando Corvera, chairman of the Committee on Agriculture, thanked DA-6. He said the facility would help ensure food sustainability in Antique, farming being one of the livelihoods of Antiqueños.

For his part, Provincial Agriculturist Nicolasito Calawag expressed hope that the facility would encourage farmers to also dabble in Hydroponic farming.

“We hope soon nga mapa-ugwad pa gid natun dya, kag ma-showcase natun sa bilog nga probinsya. Kag kon may gusto mag-adapt kang dya nga bag-o nga teknolohiya natun, we are willing to share man,” said Calawag.

The greenhouse with hydroponics in Barangay Badiang, San Jose currently grows lettuce, pechay, bitter gourd (ampalaya), and hybrid pepper.

“Sa kadya ang gina-harvest natun pa lang amo ang lettuce kag ampalaya. Kang Nov. 4, amo first batch ka harvest ta. Kadya amo ang second batch ron. Kag ginabaligya natun ri-a. Dya income generating man sa atun probinsya pero ginabaligya at the lower cost,” Calawag said./PN
