ILOILO City – A new battalion of soldiers for Panay Island that the Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division (3ID) has created have been filled with 481 new soldier recruits.
The 94th Infantry Battalion will be based in Miag-ao, Iloilo, said Captain Eduardo Precioso, 3ID spokesperson.
The newly enlisted soldiers were members of Candidate Soldier Classes 491, 492 and 505. Precioso said they completed three months of rigid Candidate Soldier Course (CSC) and Jungle Warfare Mountain Operation Course (JWMOC) at the 3rd Division Training School (3DTS).
The 3ID is based at Camp Macario Peralta in Jamindan, Capiz.
“We need more soldiers to counter insurgents in Panay and the rest of Western Viasayas,” said Precioso.
Private Jefferson Teves from Lambayong, Sultan Kudarat received the Commander, 3ID Award for topping the 146-strong CS Class 492-2017 with a General Point Average (GPA) of 90.90 percent in all evaluated subjects (academic and non-academic).
Private Mark Cristian James Brillo of Barangay Jaena Sur, Jamindan, Capiz topped the 142-strong CS Class 491-2017 with a GPA of 90.89 percent while Private Jay-ar Suerte of Pawa, Dumanjug, Cebu topped the 193-strong CS Class 505–2017 with a GPA of 89.93 percent.
3ID commander Brigadier General Dinoh Dolina urged the new soldiers to faithfully serve the people they have sworn to protect and the republic they vowed to preserve.
“Do not forget the discipline inculcated in you; that quality will set you apart from an ordinary citizen. I am referring to the kind of discipline of not only following your superiors’ orders and performing your duties but most of all the discipline to do what is morally right because that is the highest expression of service to our country and people,” said Dolina.
The Duterte administration is bent on wiping out the New People’s Army before 2018 is over, according to former Armed Forces chief of staff Eduardo Año during a visit to Iloilo City in November last year.
The creation of a new battalion will facilitate this, he said.
Año urged rebels to better surrender peacefully. The government has a reintegration program that includes housing and livelihood, he said./PN
