ILOILO City – Today is the New Year in the Chinese lunisolar calendar. In this city, however, Chinese New Year festivities have been moved to Feb. 20
The Philippine Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (PCCCI) Panay Chapter which spearheads this year’s festivities originally planned to celebrate the Chinese New Year today.
On Feb. 13, however, it decided to postpone the festivities to Tuesday next week due to Tropical Storm “Basyang.”
“Basyang” dissipated into a low pressure on Feb. 14 but the weather condition remained unpredictable, with the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration warning of the possibility that the low pressure may redevelop into a tropical depression.
Iloilo City’s annual Chinese New Year celebration is said to be the biggest outside Metro Manila.
The Regulation Ordinance 2018-020 passed by the Sangguniang Panlungsod would temporarily close major downtown streets for the Chinese New Year parade – Bonifacio Drive, F. Caram Avenue (Iznart Street), JM Basa Street, Aldeguer Street, Iznart Extension, and Plazoleta Gay – from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The parade will start from Bonifacio Drive in front of the Department of Tourism.
A Chinese food festival will open from 5 p.m. to 12 midnight on Iznart-De Leon to Iznart-Ledesma streets.
The Hua Siong College of Iloilo Lions and Dragons Team will present a cultural show at SM City Iloilo Northpoint Activity Center on Feb. 17 at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
The Chinese New Year mass at Santa Maria Parish is on Feb. 18 at 8 a.m.
The Chinese New Year Gift Giving for 3,000 indigent families will be sponsored by the PCCCI Panay Chapter at the Freedom Grandstand on Feb. 18.
Sun Yat Sen High School of Iloilo Inc. will have a cultural show at SM City Iloilo Northpoint Activity Center on Feb. 18 at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. while the “Dog Fashion Meet-up” will be at SM City Iloilo Southpoint at 3 p.m.
In the Chinese calendar, 2018 is the Year of the Dog./PN
