KALIBO, Aklan – Festival organizer Kalibo Santo Niño Ati-Atihan Foundation, Inc. (Kasafi) lined up “old and new” events for the upcoming Ati-Atihan Festival in January next year.

Bannering the festival events is none other than the Sadsad Ati-Atihan Contest on Jan. 20, a street dance competition among participants in modern, balik ati, individual, tribal small, and tribal big categories.

New events include the Under 20 Ati-Atihan Futzal Cup from Jan. 6 to 7, Philippine Airlines Mabuhay Night on Jan. 13, Ati-Atihan Festival King coronation night on Jan. 15, and the Tamboe Contest for modern Ati-Atihan groups on Jan. 16, Kasafi said.

The Mutya it Kalibo Ati-Atihan coronation night, on the other hand, will be on Jan. 12 at the Gov. Augusto B. Legaspi Sports and Cultural Center.

Kalibo Invasion Spectrum 2018 is expected to gather party-goers at the Goding Ramos Park on Jan. 19.

Hala Bira Ati-Atihan nights at Magsaysay Park and Kaean-an sa Plaza at Pastrana Park covered court will be from Jan. 15 to 21.

The Sinaot sa Calle – participated by teachers and students – will be on Jan. 17.

Paper-mache giants will also conquer Kalibo during the Aklan Higante Contest on Jan. 18.

Other activities are a street bazaar at Veterans Avenue from Jan. 15 to 22, a car show and bikers’ rally on Jan. 14 at Pastrana Park, SangKalibong Tamboe and Parade of Floats on Jan. 15, and Pagpadungog on Jan. 21 at Magsaysay Park.

Festival religious activities were also scheduled.

The annual Paeapak will be from Jan. 12 to 21 while the parish visitation and community vigils were set to be from Jan. 11 to 20.

A nine-day devotional novena for Señor Santo Niño de Kalibo will be held starting Jan. 12 while a dawn penitential procession is set on Jan. 20.

On Jan. 21, devotees are expected to attend the Pilgrims Mass and transfer of Señor Santo Niño de Kalibo starting 7 a.m. A religious dance procession will be held on the same day at 2 p.m.

Closing liturgical rites will be held on the last day around 8 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Cathedral. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
