SAN JOSE, Antique – Fifty-six cases of sexual abuse have been recorded in Antique in 2016.
Rape cases reached 32, statistics from the Philippine National Police’s Women and Children Protection Desk showed.
Acts of lasciviousness cases numbered 19; seduction, four; and unjust vexation, one, police records showed.
Among victims of sexual abuse, 29 were children. Nine were victims of rape, while 21 have fallen prey to acts of lasciviousness, police said.
Meanwhile 15 children were involved in rape and other sexual abuse cases.
Police disclosed the statistics in line with the observance of the Women’s Month in the province, which kicked off with the One Billion Rising dance campaign to end violence against women and children (VAWC) on March 6.
The Gender and Development Interagency Committee of Antique called for everyone’s participation in helping raise awareness among families on how to put an end to VAWC in their communities.
All VAWC cases must be reported to the proper authorities, stressed Senior Police Officer 2 Cheryl Sapinosa.
When at risk, children and young women should seek assistance from their teachers, barangay officials or other trusted people, Sapinosa said. (PIA/PN)
