The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) will soon begin enforcing a three-month closed fishing season in the Visayan Sea, which includes the waters near Carles, Iloilo seen in this photo. Violators, like small-scale, medium- and large-scale commercial operators, may be penalized up to P500,000. The ban aims to protect dwindling marine resources and goes into effect on November 15, 2026. BALITA HALIN SA KAPITOLYO PHOTO

Iloilo barangays honored for good governance

WHERE’S THE FLOOD CONTROL? Despite a multi-million peso budget and a December deadline, the Flood Mitigation Structure in Lapuz District by the Department of Public Works and Highways remains unfinished. Budburan-Mansaya Creek is still un-rehabilitated, overgrown with vegetation, and shows no visible sign of the promised structure. Surrounding barangays, which were among those heavily flooded last month, blame defective or incomplete flood control projects across the city. The situation has fueled public frustration and intensified calls for a full investigation into public works along Iloilo City’s waterways.

Meaning sina nga kon magsulod kita sa isa ka hospital, basic or ward accommodation, wala kita sang pagabayaran. Aton lang requirements, dapat confined sa basic or ward accommodation,” says Janimhe Jalbuna, head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) in Western Visayas.
