BACOLOD City – Bacolod Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts student-athletes from volleyball, basketball and athletics are set to compete in separate ASEAN School Games qualifying tournaments this week.
The Thunderbolts girls volleyball team are set to represent Region 6 in the National Invitational Sports Competition to be held from May 25 to 27 in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental.
Leading the way for the team to be handled by Roberto Calamba Jr. were many-time Best Setter and Best Libero awardee Katherine Shaine Cortez and Gwen Toledo Bañas, respectively.
Also in the team were Ilongga Ana Hermosura, Dona Mae de Leon, Jothea Ramos, Jihan Chuatico, Alex Montoro, Ysabelle Chua, Amber Lily Biong, Antheia Galicia, Patricia Grace Hiponia and Alijah Ysulan.
“We are honored to be invited to represent Western Visayas in this qualifiers. Our players will definitely give their best to get that chance to represent the country in the ASEAN School Games,” Calamba said.
“However, we are competing against teams and schools from around the country so we know that this is not going to be easy for us but we will give our very best,” he added.
Aside from volleyball, Bacolod Tay Tung basketball team is also hoping to secure a seat in the ASEAN School Games this November in Dumaguete City as they compete in a separate qualifiers in Marikina City.
The Yong Despi-mentored team started their campaign last Monday with a 75-69 upset over Ateneo de Manila University before suffering an 87-57 loss to Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu.
“We started on a wrong foot with a loss to Cebu but our players bounced back against Ateneo,” Despi said. “We are just grateful to this opportunity and we will try to win our games to reach the ASG.”
The Tay Tung’s athletics team, led by Krisha Dedoyco Aguillon, Shaltea Delotavo and Jade Cordova, are set to compete in their ASG qualifiers later this month in Iloilo City.
The ASEAN School Games is making a return since the COVID-19 pandemic started with seven events namely volleyball, basketball, athletics, badminton, sepak takraw, table tennis and swimming./PN
