MANILA – Foton-Bacolod Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts surged to a 3-0 start in the 10th St. Ignatius Invitational Volleyball Cup at the Lux Oriens Gym of the Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) in Canduman, Mandaue City.
The youth-laden Thunderbolts kicked off their campaign with a 25-19, 25-21 straight-set victory over host Ateneo de Cebu Magis on Saturday with Aurea Alvero and Katherine Shane Cortez stepping up.
Alvero then teamed up with newcomer Julianne Monares as they steer the Thunderbolts to an easy 25-14, 25-23 sweep over the University of Bohol.
Despite playing their third match in just a day, the Thunderbolts still looked fresh. They hacked out a 25-19, 25-21 straight-set triumph over the Ateneo de Cebu-B squad.
Thunderbolts assistant coach Roberto Calamba Jr. lauded his players for displaying their consistency despite playing three matches in a span of a day.
“I am impressed with the way they played because our squad are new combination of players. Hindi sila ‘yung laging magkakasama sa scrimmages so it was nice to see them jive inside the court,” Calamba said.
