KALIBO, Aklan – Rep. Carlito Marquez (Aklan) filed a bill seeking to grant social pension to persons with disabilities (PWDs).
House Bill No. 5984 proposed to provide a P2,000 monthly pension to over 1.5 million PWDs across the country, according to Marquez.
“There is no social pension for PWDs right now, only tax deductions,” he explained.
These benefits were provided by the Republic Act (RA) 9442 which amended RA 7277, or the Magna Carta for Disabled Person and Other Purposes.
Under the law, PWDs are entitled to receive a 20-percent discount on top of the value-added tax exemption in purchasing products and availing themselves of services.
There are some local government units that provide a P2,000 monthly social assistance to PWDs, which Marquez wanted to introduce nationwide through his proposal.
“PWDs in rural areas remain the poorest among the poor. The social assistance will help them,” said Marquez.
A proposed database will collect comprehensive and updated information on all PWDs for effective planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of services./PN
