ILOILO City – The average rice production in Guimaras is 3.3 metric tons per hectare, but Agriculture secretary Emmanuel Piñol wanted it doubled.
Guimaras is already 112.3 percent rice sufficient, reocrds from the Department of Agriculture showed.
But after Piñol turned over P5.9 million for the rice processing center in Barangay Cabana, San Lorenzo, he believed that rice production in the province can rise to at least six metric tons per hectare.
“Farmers need to have access to technology, financing anf marketing in order to obtain improved production,” said Piñol during his “Biyaheng Bukid” visit in the province.
Piñol urged the farmers to use hybrid seed varieties released by the Philippine Rice Research Institute and the International Rice Research Institute.
He also said that a review in rice production is needed.
“The market price of rice in the province is only P12 per kilo,” said Piñol. (PIA/PN)
