BORACAY – A group based in this island resort has been recognized as the Best Volunteer Organization in Western Visayas.
Cited for excellence in disaster management and humanitarian assistance, the Boracay Fire Rescue and Ambulance Volunteers (BFRAV) was bestowed the award as part of this year’s Gawad Kalasag.
Gawad Kalasag (Kalamidad at Sakuna Labanan, Sariling Galing ang Kaligtasan) was organized by the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council headed by the Office of Civil Defense.
The BFRAV received P50,000 during a ceremony Wednesday, Dec. 7 in a hotel at Smallville Complex in Iloilo City.
According to the organization’s founder and CEO, part of the prize will be used to buy additional equipment.
“A portion will be for the maintenance of our fire trucks and ambulances,” Rear Admiral Leonard Tirol of the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary said.
The BFRAV has four fire trucks, five ambulances, a boom truck, and a 150-horsepower ambulance speedboat.
This month the organization was set to receive a brand-new ambulance from China.
Moreover, the group has eight nurses, two of whom are emergency medical technologists; three ambulance drivers; two ambulance speedboat captains; 25 trained fire volunteers; and three foreign fire and medical advisers.
Tirol assured all locals and tourists in the island of “a 24/7 fire and medical response.” (PNA)
