SAN JOSE, Antique – Senior citizens in this capital town were becoming more enterprising after undergoing livelihood training.
Members of the San Jose de Buenavista Municipal Senior Citizens Association of the Philippines (MSCAP) were being trained on herbal soap-making, fish processing and spicy vinegar-making, among others.
Ruben Nerecina devoted time as trainer-consultant under the Sustainable Livelihood Program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
In 2014 — the same year he retired from the Philippine Coconut Authority — Nerecina said the DSWD gave them P180,000 for the trainings.
In 2015 they were allotted P700,000, which they may now use before 2016 ends, said Nerecina.
San Jose de Buenavista MSCAP has 1,561 active members living in 28 barangays. They were formed into clusters, each having its separate training.
Their products were now being displayed for sale at the outlets Produkto Antiqueño, Enriqueta and Pasalubong Center.
“The elderly residents were now earning,” Nerecina said. Part of their income goes to the MSCAP and the clusters, but a big sum goes to the individual members, he said.
Now the practices at the San Jose de Buenavista MSCAP were being replicated in other municipalities, like Culasi and Sebaste.
Meanwhile elderly Tobias Fornier residents started training on fish processing on Wednesday, Dec. 7.
Twenty-five senior citizens, their family members and some fisherfolk were participating in the three-day training.
They were being taught how to make smoked fish, bangus hamonado, embutido, nuggets, and fish balls, among others, with the aim of making them self-sufficient. (PNA)
