MANILA – Taking a road trip across Iloilo, Negros and Cebu provinces may soon be possible.
The government plans to build bridges connecting these major Visayan provinces.
They will be completed before the Duterte administration ends, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
The $1-billion project is “the most ambitious program in the history of our nation.”
“We are already in the process of conducting prefeasibility studies,” said DPWH secretary Mark Villar. “Once this project is finished, you will be able to take a road trip from Iloilo to Cebu.”
Rep. Jerry Treñas (Iloilo City) told Panay News he “wholeheartedly” supports the project.
Connecting Iloilo, Negros and Cebu “will even improve economic development in the Visayas,” said the congressman.
Villar said the DPWH may open the project for bidding next year.
Meanwhile Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri expressed support for the project.
Aside from making the transport of goods easier, interconnecting the provinces will boost tourism, said the senator, who traces his roots in Negros Occidental.
Iloilo is under Western Visayas, while Cebu is part of Central Visayas.
Negros, on the other hand, is a two-province (Occidental and Oriental) island region created only in May 2015./PN
