BACOLOD City – Cadiz City, Negros Occidental had been placed under a state of calamity.
Strong winds and surges over the past weekend have destroyed and damaged houses and fishing boats.
The Sangguniang Panlungsod declared a state of calamity upon the recommendation of Mayor Patrick Escalante.
Escalante said the declaration allowed for the release of the Quick Response Fund.
Some P2 million will be given out as financial aid to those whose houses and/or fishing boats were damaged or destroyed, and used for relief and rice assistance, Escalante said.
Forty-two pump boats were destroyed while 57 were damaged when strong winds and surges battered coastal areas in Cadiz.
Twelve houses were destroyed while 110 were damaged in 11 barangays. Around 112 families were affected.
The city government estimated the cost of damage at P2 million, Escalante said.
Locals who lost their houses will be transferred to a National Housing Authority relocation site in Barangay Tiglawigan, he said.
Strong winds and surges also hit Victorias City and Manapla and EB Magalona towns.
In Victorias, 10 houses were destroyed while 68 were damaged. Eleven fishing boats were also damaged.
In Manapla, nine houses were destroyed while 56 were damaged, said Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer Alejandro Malijoc. Thirty-five boats were destroyed while 106 were damaged, he said.
In EB Magalona, three houses were destroyed and 50 were damaged, while 12 motorized boats were destroyed and 16 were damaged, said Edgardo Agaravante, the town’s disaster management officer./PN
