VICTORIAS CITY, Negros Occidental – Rep. Alfredo “Albee” Benitez (3rd District) supports the restoration of the death penalty.
Capital punishment gives people planning to commit crimes a “choice,” according to the congressman.
“May dalan ka: makadto ka sa tuo ukon makadto ka sa wala,” said Benitez. “Kon makadto ka sa tuo, madagdag ka, mapatay ka. Kon makadto ka sa wala, mabuhi ka.”
Benitez stressed that death penalty itself cannot kill.
It is the people who get to decide their fate, he said. “Ara na sa imo kon gusto mo nga isulod ka sa death penalty chamber or indi.”
Under the House bill seeking to reinstate death penalty, 21 crimes are punishable by hanging, lethal injection or firing squad.
But Benitez believes they are too many. Capital punishment should cover only heinous crimes, “inang mga crimes nga indi mahimo sang normal nga tawo.”
The congressman cannot say for certain if death penalty can reduce crimes.
“Inconclusive,” he said. “Pero kon makita sang tawo nga kon makasala sila i-hang sila or i-lethal injection, maminsar gid na sila before doing those crimes.”
Benitez added: “Kon ako [lang], mas nami gid kon may deterrent para pabal-on ang mga tawo nga gahimo [heinous crimes].”
Earlier Vice Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson expressed favor toward the reinstatement of death penalty, but only for heinous crimes and “with lethal injection as method [of execution].”/PN
