ROXAS City – The municipality of Panitan, Capiz was placed under the state of calamity after sustaining damage due to the flooding that tropical depression “Agaton” caused.
Members of the Sangguniang Bayan (SB) unanimously approved the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council’s (MDRRMC) request on Thursday to place the entire town under the state of calamity.
Rosauro del Castillo, liaison officer of the Panitan MDRRMC, said the town’s agriculture sector sustained P67,678,850 loss, citing data from the Municipal Agriculture’s Office.
The flooding has forced 618 families, or 2,499 individuals, to move to evacuation centers, del Castillo said.
They moved back to their houses on Friday after the flood subsided, he added.
The MDRRMC has already distributed to the affected individuals 700 family food packs.
Now that the town was placed under the state of calamity, the MDRRMC can use its P5.6-million calamity fund, del Castillo said.
The fund will be used for the procurement of seeds for farmers and to provide financial assistance to the families with partially and totally damaged houses.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office reported that water levels in the rivers at Maayon, Sigma, Mambusao, Dao, Panitan, Pontevedra, and Panay were still above normal. (PNA/PN)
