BACOLOD City – Board of Trustees president Ben Lopue Jr. believes that St. John’s Institute (SJI)-Bacolod’s status as a Catholic school will be restored, especially after the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) expressed support to it.
Lopue received communication from CEAP president Father Noel Tabura and Cannon lawyer Father Antonio Dacanay supporting the Catholic school status restoration of SJI-Bacolod.
Monsignor Patricio Buzon, bishop of the Diocese of Bacolod, ordered in May 2017 to “peacefully disengage its relationship” with SJI-Bacolod, stripping its Catholic school status.
This was after the failed negotiations between the Church and the school over the ownership of the land property where the Queen of Peace Parish is located.
After Buzon’s order, the Queen of Peace Parish can no longer hold masses and other sacraments.
SJI-Bacolod’ Board of Trustees and alumni association questioned the Buzon’s order.
Lopue said they have asked CEAP if SJI-Bacolod’s membership with it will also be denied following Buzon’s order.
CEAP then made a thorough deliberation, stressed Lopue. He said they were given “hope” after it ruled that SJI-Bacolod did not commit any erroneous act that resulted to the withdrawal of its Catholic school status.
CEAP also appealed to Buzon to allow SJI-Bacolod to continue its services to the Diocese of Bacolod.
“We thought when the Bishop made a ruling on the conflict, it was already a dead end for us but with the CEAP’s interpretation of the Canon Law, we might elevate the issue at hand to the higher authorities in Vatican City,” Lopue said./PN
