ILOILO City – Twenty-eight basketball teams from two age brackets are set to compete in the Chairman’s Cup 2022 which kicks off at 1 p.m. today at the Ateneo de Iloilo Gym here.
Chairman’s Cup Operations Head Bayani RH Ladrido said 14 squads will participate in the 17-Under category (Born 2005 and after) and 14, to, in the 21-Under (Born 2001 and after).
Leading the teams in 17-Under are school-based teams Elite Lab (St Robert’s International Academy), M&D Ros (University of San Agustin), Bounceketball (Hua Siong College of Iloilo), Rooks (Sun Yat Sen High School), Oton National High School and Nymspring (Jalandoni Memorial National High School).
Also participating in the category are Passi City, Pototan, Cougars, Phantom Elite Roxas City, Converse, Mun Badiangan, Hustle and Bing Conlu Camp.
Meanwhile, the 21-Under teams are led by Elite Lab, Atop, Medics IDC, Guimaras Leopards, Pototan, Barotac Viejo National High School and Team Antique in Group A.
In Group B are Conce Crita Villa-USA, Phantom Elite Roxas City, Hustle, Hoopers (Dingle), Ninja Gladiators (Tigbauan), GG Sports and EMB (Emman Monfort Basketball).
“Teams in both categories will be divided into two groups and they will battle among each other via single round robin,” Ladrido told Panay News on Friday.
He added: “Top four teams per group will play in semifinals and later in group finals. Yung mag-emerge as champion sa Group A and B will battle sa finals.”
Ladrido also said that retired basketball player and former Gilas Pilipinas team captain Chris Tiu has been invited to the opening of the tournament, which will be held during four weekends starting today.
“Chris Tiu is a decorated player. A former UAAP champion with Ateneo, former PBA champion with Rain or Shine, and also a fixture in Gilas,” Ladrido said. “His presence will definitely inspire our young players here in this tournament.”
Chairman’s Cup 2022 is being organized by the Juanito T. Uy and Fanny L. Uy Foundation along with Toyota Iloilo and Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas in cooperation with the City of Iloilo./PN
