ILOILO City and the component city of Passi in Iloilo province will host the Children’s Games on Feb. 10 to 11 and Feb. 17 to 18, respectively, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) announced on Sunday.
Around 900 participants will represent the seven districts in the Iloilo City leg while 600 delegates from 51 barangays will play in the Passi City leg.
The events involved are basketball, volleyball, swimming, athletics, gymnastics, archery, judo, air rifle shooting, boxing, karatedo, arnis, badminton, table tennis, and weightlifting.
Also included are 10 parlor games, which aim to reconnect the children to cultural education, and dance sports.
PSC chairman William Ramirez said the Children’s Games will be the first step toward discovering new talents from the grassroots and an opportunity for young athletes to sharpen their skills.
The Children’s Games will promote the “child’s right to play” and “social interaction with other children,” said Ramirez.
It also provides “an opportunity to be discovered” and helps “develop leaders from among our youth,” he said.
Other areas in Western Visayas eyed to host the weekend-only sporting event are Bago City, Negros Occidental; Aklan; Boracay; and Guimaras./PN
