SANTA Clarita International High School Primes pulled off a convincing 82-70 win over Ateneo de Cebu in the Dinagyang Mayor’s Cup Battle of the Champions at the Hua Siong College of Iloilo Ledesco campus gym.

Ralph Bajon posted 27 points while Marvin Cuerbo added 24 markers, including six 3-point conversions, while Giann Paul Nahine added 11 markers for Primes on Friday.

Primes, the 2017 Palarong Pambansa silver medalist, solidified its hold of the top spot by clobbering ILOPRISAA champion Hua Siong 109-66 the following day.

“So far, contented naman ako sa pinapakita ng players ko,” coach Rodel Camacho said.

“We will just try to compete and win with the players that we have,” he added. “This is also an opportunity for us to test our rookies.”

Hua Siong still has a chance to advance to the finals after scoring 105-93 against Bacolod Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts during the opening-day match on Friday.

Mark Nonoy – who reportedly drew attention from Manila-based schools – waxed hot with 41 points, including seven 3-pointers, for Hua Siong. Binoy Beliran and Paolo Villariza chipped in 13 and 11, respectively.

Thunderbolts also kept its hopes alive after an 87-83 victory over Ateneo de Cebu behind the explosive performance of Harold Azarcon./PN
