SAN MIGUEL Beermen turned to its veterans in the endgame to hack out an 88-76 victory over TNT KaTropa in the PBA Philippine Cup out-of-town game last night at the University of San Agustin Gym in Iloilo City.
With both teams knotted at 71-all, Beermen came up with 5 straight points from Alex Cabagnot, June Mar Fajardo and Arwind Santos for a 76-71 lead. KaTropa countered with scores from Jayson Castro and Anthony Semerad to come to within 74-76.
After several misses by KaTropa, Beermen increased its advantage to 81-74 with an inside hit from Santos and a triple from Cabagnot before building its largest lead at 12 on 5 straight points from Santos.
Fajardo led Beermen – now with a 3-0 win-loss record – with 20 points. Santos and Marcio Lassiter chipped in 15 points apiece, while Cabagnot had double-double 11 points and 12 rebounds.
KaTropa had a strong start with baskets from Castro, Jeth Troy Rosario and Moala Tautuaa for a 24-12 lead. Beermen began its moves behind Fajardo and Von Pessumal to come to within 35-36 at the half.
TNT raised its lead early in the third 59-51 on inside conversions from Tautuaa and Rosario. Beermen, however, slowly clawed its way back on conversions from Lassiter and Matthew Ganuelas-Rosser to cut the deficit 58-61.
Beermen opened the fourth with 7 straight points from Cabagnot and Brian Heruela to take a 65-61 lead. Since then both teams exchanged baskets for a 71-all score with over five minutes left in the match.
Rosario finished with double-double 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Tautuaa and Roger Pogoy added 12 and 11 points, respectively, for KaTropa, which dropped to 1-2./PN
