SAN JOSE, Antique – The Provincial Convergence Committee discussed Republic Act (RA) 10173, or the Data Privacy Act of 2012, in its meeting recently.
RA 10173 aims to “protect the fundamental human right of privacy and of communication while ensuring free flow of information to promote innovation and growth.”
The meeting was spearheaded by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Antique provincial government.
Fe Gencianeo, regional focal officer for the national household targeting system, said the act made an impact on data sharing of the Listahanan, or the DSWD’s list of poor families in 2015.
“It is essential for the local government units and other data users to know the law so they could access the data and use it properly according to its purpose,” Genciano added.
During the meeting, Gov. Rhodora Cadiao stressed that there is an urgent need for the data in the Listahanan to be available at the provincial capitol so that they can make necessary intervention programs for the poor.
The Department of Health and PhiHealth also need the data in the list for their services.
Genciano and her team discussed the guidelines under the act and how the agencies can obtain the data they needed.
The National Privacy Commission has been monitoring compliance with the act since Aug. 24, 2016, when it promulgated the law’s implementing rules and regulations. (PIA/PN)
