MANILA – The odds seem against the Mahindra Floodbuster as newly-acquired three-point gunner Gary David is set to miss at least a month of play in the 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup following a knee injury.
Floodbuster interim coach Chris Gavina said the injury of the former Gilas Pilipinas mainstay was sustained before David signed to a one-conference deal with the team earlier this month.
“He (David) may have had it when he was still playing for the San Miguel (Beermen) last season and just recently confirmed after he underwent the diagnosis last week,” Gavina said.
“He’ll be out of commission for Mahindra for at least four to five weeks,” added Gavina. “If anything, we’re gonna get him a hundred percent and ready for the Commissioner’s Cup.”
The Dinalupihan, Bataan-native David was being tipped as Mahindra’s secret weapon to turn things around for the Floodbuster after letting go of key players Aldrech Ramos, Rommel Canaleta, Bradwyn Guinto, Keith Agovida, and Juan Paolo Taha.
David, however, was ineffective in his debut game for the Floodbuster as he only scored a point on a measly 0-of-9 shooting, including six misses from the three point area, against the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters.
The injury of the one-time PBA Best Player of the Conference awardee was the reason why the Floodbuster pounced immediately on signing Jeric Teng, who was not renewed by the Painters during the off-season.
“Jeric showed a lot these past few days of what he’s capable of,” Gavina said. “He showed that he’s capable of being a great defender, and once he gets his game legs and his rhythm shots going, I think he’ll be fine.”
The Floodbuster, which lists Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao as its playing coach, remains in the cellar of the standings with a 0-4 slate. They nearly listed their first win but fell short against defending champions Beermen, 94-91./PN
