MANILA – After falling short in the 2016 Philippine Superliga Grand Prix, is RC Cola-Army Lady Troopers’ Jovelyn Gonzaga set for an early retirement to focus on her time at the Philippine Army?
“Thank you [Philippine Superliga] for believing in me and for giving me lots of opportunities to showcase my talent not just here but internationally. Dreams do really come true, this is a fruitful year, indeed!” shared the Ilongga on Instagram.
“Next year will be a different story for me, different path to take but i will surely come back. God bless, Philippine Volleyball.”
The Guimaras-native Gonzaga said that she is scheduled to undergo the Candidate Soldiers Course, a six-to-eight month training program for Philippine Army members, along with some of her teammate – deterring their participation in tournaments in the near future.
Gonzaga had a busy 2016, helping the Lady Troopers win the PSL Invitational Cup where she was crowned the tournament MVP. She also led the Lady Troopers team to claim the PSL Beach Volleyball Challenge Cup title.
Aside from suiting up for the Lady Troopers in two PSL conferences, Gonzaga also became part of Philippine’s delegation in the historic Asian and World club championships.
The Lady Troopers remain unsure if it will have enough players to build a competitive lineup for the 2017 PSL season with most of its key players undergoing military training.
“Baka mahirapan kami. Bago ka kasi makapasok sa Army kailangan mong dumaan sa series of tests from mental to psychological and physical exams. Pag nakapasa, you have to undergo training pa,” said Lady Troopers mentor Emilio Reyes.
“Nung nasa (Shakey’s) V-League kami, nakakakuha kami ng guest player na local pero dito sa PSL hindi na kasi ‘yung mga dati naming player may mga ballclubs na dito,” he added./PN
