ILOILO City – Perennial underdog University of San Agustin (USA) Golden Eagles dethroned the John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (JBLFMU) Dolphins – effectively ending a six-year reign by the mariner-cagers to claim the 2016 Iloilo Private Schools Athletics Association (ILOPRISAA) tertiary men’s basketball championship with a 61-54 victory on Monday at the USA Gym.
USA gained the upper hand early in match with stunning attacks for a 30-24 lead at halftime. The Golden Eagles widened the gap even more, exiting the third quarter at 50-36.
The home team, however, squandered their initial advantage, as the Dolphins quickly pounced back in the dying minutes of the finale. Refusing to hand over their crown easily, JBLFMU limited the Eagles to just three points as they surged closer at 53-41.
But, USA saved the victory with consecutive baskets and a strong defense to end the championship game with a comfortable seven-point lead at 61-54, as the Dolphins settled with silver for the first time in six years.
San Agustin also shined bright in the ILOPRISAA Academic and Cultural Competitions held at the USA Nursing Review Center and USA Auditorium, respectively, earlier in the week.
USA claimed gold in the tertiary level of the following events: binalaybay, guitar solo, vocal solo (Classical), vocal solo (Pop), contemporary dance, and hip hop dance.
While taking home silver in extemporaneous speaking (English), character interpretation, oration (Filipino), dance sports (Latin), dance sports (Modern Standard), as well as in the Math and Computer Science quizzes.
USA also bagged bronze in oration (English) and extemporaneous speech (Filipino).
Meanwhile, Central Philippine University’s Mar Anthony Alimo-ot and Joshua Oducado were awarded gold in the Math and Computer science quiz bowls, respectively./PN
