MANILA – Sen. Leila de Lima is calling for a Senate probe into the hacking of the Commission on Elections’ (Comelec) voter database last year.
“The proposed inquiry is aimed to preserve the sanctity and integrity of the entire electoral process starting with the protection of the voters’ registration procedure and all pertinent information,” de Lima said on Monday.
The Comelec data breach in March leaked the personal information of some 55-million Filipinos registered for the 2016 elections.
“The rising number of Internet vigilantes who tamper with our people’s right to privacy should be everyone’s cause for worry. The need to preserve the right to privacy should be paramount,” said the senator in her Senate Resolution No. 260.
While the Comelec denied any leak of confidential personal information, the National Privacy Commission recommended on Dec. 28 the criminal prosecution of chairman Andres Bautista for his failure to ensure privacy and security of voters.
The lack of appreciation for data protection on Bautista’s part, the Commission said, is a violation of Republic Act 10173, or the 2012 Data Privacy Act.
“There is no denying that the Comelec data breach that occurred is indeed unacceptable, and that those responsible should be fully prosecuted and punished, whether they are foreign or domestic actors,” de Lima said./PN
