BACOLOD City – The Diocese of Bacolod will lead a prayer rally on Dec. 12 to express its opposition to the restoration of death penalty.
A procession will be held at 3 p.m. from the Sacred Heart Seminary Shrine toward the city public plaza, Father Felix Pasquin, rector of the San Sebastian Cathedral, said in a statement Thursday, Dec. 8.
At the plaza, a Liturgy of the Word will be celebrated, and Bishop Patricio Buzon will deliver a message.
Teachers and students from Catholic schools and the faithful from various parishes are expected to join the procession.
On Wednesday the House justice committee approved a measure seeking to restore capital punishment for heinous crimes.
Among the crime punishable with death penalty, as stated in House Bill No. 1, were drug trafficking, arson, treason, murder, rape, kidnapping, and carnapping.
Execution may be done through hanging, firing squad or lethal injection, the bill stated.
Death penalty was revoked in 2006 when Republic Act 9346, or the Act Prohibiting the Imposition of Death Penalty in the Philippines, was enacted.
Majority Leader Rodolfo Fariñas said the bill has reached the plenary but will still be subject to extensive deliberations to get the “common sentiment” of the House. (PNA)
