MANILA – Vice President Leni Robredo called for an end to the “culture of impunity” among police officers in light of recent raids in Bulacan and Manila that killed some 58 suspected drug offenders.
“Ito ay isang bagay na kailangan mag-express tayo ng outrage,” Robredo told a news conference on Thursday. “Hindi naman tayo ganyan e. Hindi tayo ito. Iyong culture of impunity, matagal na nating isinikwal. Sana hindi na natin papayagang makabalik pa.”
The government was waging a “war” against drug trafficking. No less than President Rodrigo Duterte encouraged police to “shoot” drug suspects if they resist arrest.
“Kung merong kasalanan papanagutin, pero dapat iyong due process isinasaalang-alang,” she said. “Hindi na hinahayaang gumiling pa iyong mga proseso na nasa Konstitusyon natin para siguruhin na iyong hustisya naibibigay para sa lahat.”
At least 32 drug suspects were reported killed in raids the Bulacan provincial police conducted from Monday to Tuesday evening. Some 107 others were arrested.
In Manila on Wednesday evening, at least 26 drug suspects were killed in a “one-time, big-time” antidrug operation after reportedly resisting arrest.
“Good” was how Duterte described the bloody operations in a speech before Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption members in Malacañang.
“Iyong namatay daw kanina sa Bulacan, 32, in a massive raid. Maganda iyon. Makapatay lang tayo ng mga another 32 every day, then maybe we can reduce what ails this country,” the President said.
Earlier the Philippine National Police (PNP) said it will investigate the antidrug police raids in Bulacan.
Its Internal Affairs Service (IAS) will determine whether or not the officers police went beyond the guidelines, according to PNP spokesperson Dionardo Carlos.
“An investigation will be carried out by the PNP-IAS motu propio (on its own),” Carlos told a news conference on Wednesday. “We will look at the operations conducted kasi multiple iyong ginawa ng Bulacan.”
“This was not a single operation with one target,” he added. “We will look at their report and tingnan natin kasi they delivered result. We will see what types of operation were conducted.”
“If there were 22 or 25 operations conducted so ibig sabihin normal siya,” Carlos said. “Kung single operation resulting to that number of deaths, titingnan talaga. It only shows iyong Bulacan nagsasagawa ng ganito, they are doing their part in the antidrug war.”/PN
