KALIBO, Aklan – Residents of flood-prone barangays in this capital town may soon benefit from a regional evacuation center.
When typhoons hit the province, the Aklan River overflows, causing flood in Kalibo, said Mayor William Lachica.
The Department of Public Works and Highways Region 6 is constructing the evacuation center at a cost of P36 million in Sitio Bukid, Barangay Tigayon.
Funding was from the department’s infrastructure fund for 2016.
The center will have a kitchen, generator and pump rooms, a prayer room, a laundry area with water tank, a drainage system, a materials recovery facility, male and female toilets, a dining area, and an accommodation building that can house 35 families.
It will also have an infirmary building, a pharmacy and an emergency rescue office for agencies involved in relief operations and response.
The center’s construction is under the mitigation program of the National Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Council.
Other evacuation centers – about 3,000 square meters each – were also being built in Libertad in Antique, Roxas City in Capiz, and Carles and Zarraga in Iloilo.
These will augment school buildings and covered courts, where victims commonly seek refuge during disasters. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
