MANILA – Jerrick Ahanmisi came up with clutch baskets for Adamson University Falcons to escape University of Santo Tomas Tigers 75-70 in the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball at SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Trailing 64-63 with over two minutes left in the Wednesday match, Ahanmisi made a triple for Falcons to surge 66-64. But Tigers responded with an inside hit from Jeepy Faundo to tie the score 66-all.
Falcons regained the advantage 68-66 on free throws by Cameroonian Papi Sarr before widening the lead 73-67 with a layup and three free throws from Ahanmisi.
Tigers had its last push in the final 12 seconds on a 3-pointer by Carlo Escalambre but Ahanmisi sealed the victory for Falcons with two conversions from free throw line.
Ahanmisi finished with 21 points, including 11 in the final quarter, while Sarr chipped in with double-double 12 points and 14 rebounds for Falcons, which improved its win-loss record to 7-4.
Falcons head coach Franz Pumaren admitted he was not satisfied with the way they handled Tigers, which was already out of contention after remaining winless in 11 matches.
“It’s so hard to play a team like UST, especially that there is no [more] pressure on them,” Pumaren said. “There is no need for them to push because they are already out, but they still gave us a tough time.”
Regie Boy Basibas top-scored with 17 points, Faundo had double-double 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Steve Akomo contributed 10 points and 17 rebounds for UST./PN
