SAN JOSE, Antique – A provincial orientation on federalism in the Philippines was conducted in this capital town.
The orientation was a part of the intensified federalism campaign in the province, according to Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) information officer Judy Mae Magdato.
DILG regional legal officer Atty. Cedric Jaranilla added that the orientation aims to educate and make people understand federalism.
The orientation highlighted the basics of a federal government and its advantages and disadvantages, which were compared to that of a unitary form of government.
About 190 participants composed of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan members, municipal mayors, Sangguniang Bayan members, police chiefs, municipal social welfare and development office personnel, municipal health officers, faith-based organization representatives, Liga ng mga Barangay presidents, municipal anti-drug abuse council representatives, municipal local government operations officers, and Mamamayang Ayaw Sa Anomalya-Mamamayang Ayaw Sa Iligal na Droga community facilitators attended the event.
Jaranilla stressed that local government units may initiate their own information campaign activities on federalism provided that these are coordinated with the DILG field officers and DILG-accredited advocacy partners.
Questions regarding federalism (its viability, process and effects) were raised during an open forum. (PIA/PN)
