SAN JOSE, Antique – Fighting illegal drugs was one of his major accomplishments in his first five months in office, Mayor Elmer Untaran said.
Untaran assumed the mayorship in July last year after winning in the May election, replacing Rony Molina, who ran for and won as Sangguniang Panlalawigan member.
He claimed to have given priority to the Duterte administration’s “war” on drugs.
The local government and the police ensured that drug dependents who surrendered as part of Oplan Double Barrel were monitored, drug-tested, and given medical assistance and alternative activities, he said.
One of such activities was the inter-barangay games dubbed as “Basketball Kontra Droga.”
Untaran said he also worked for the welfare of youth offenders.
A training center for children in conflict with law will be built at Farmville, a demo farm in Barangay San Pedro.
Untaran called the project, funded by the Ayala-Consuelo Foundation, Inc., his “running moment.”
He said the training center will help youth offenders live normal lives again.
Among his other priorities are health and nutrition, peace and order, disaster preparedness, traffic, agriculture, poverty alleviation, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities, said the mayor.
“I still have long hours to work, and I pledge to do my very best to attain the vision of San Jose — a model of sustainable urban and ecological development with globally competitive economy and with a dynamic, participative and efficient governance,” Untaran said.
In December last year, San Jose received the EXCELL (Excellence in Local Governance) from the Department of the Interior and Local Government.
It was the Best Performing Municipality (first- to third-class) in Western Visayas, specifically in Administrative Governance, Social Governance, Economic Governance, and Environmental Governance. (With a report from Philippine News Agency/PN)
