For our ‘backliners’

by Shy Polido

AS WE celebrate National Heroes’ Day today, let’s shift the spotlight a little to those bustling at the backstage.  Without these busy hands, the blocks we are trying to put up may face its downfall. They are the spine of this war. And as much as we give our hearts to those on the front lines, we are also extending our sincerest gratefulness and appreciation to those on the back lines.

Now we will get to know these heroes taking the same huge risk amid the country’s ongoing battle against the unseen enemy.

Farmers and fisherfolk

Salute to all farmers!

For keeping your countrymen nourished

As they took the center spot on stage

You all are there to do your share

Your green thumbs are all we need

As we march forward,

our energy’s from your feed

You sow and grow seeds not just to provide food

But the sprouts of hard work inspire us

To do our part for the common good

Meanwhile

Wading in to the waters of new normal

The breathe of salt air’s making

us as breathing individuals

But just imagine the risk off the shore

Courage oozes as winds come strong

Loads of protein then up on our plates

As we hurry for another battle now healthy and great

If you happen to see one, greet and thank a farmer or a fisherfolk today! We appreciate your today’s efforts. Hope to see you on a wonderful tomorrow.

Lineworkers/power line technicians

You allow us to embrace both day and night

As we journey, we need your fearless heart

For handling voltages was never easy

It may cost you your life

So we’re praying for your safety

In these times against the gusts

Careful on your way up, Sir

Life with lights is indeed warmer

Just be steady and strong because you matter

Light for light. We also offer our deepest love to all our lineworkers who lost their lives amidst the pandemic. Salute.

But they never asked for a penny

For their concern’s the welfare of the community

Hand in hand supported our cause

It’s an extra chore but they still took part of the heavy work

In times of emergency, we can rely to these people. No need to call Superman to save a needy soul. For the heroes are just around. Meanwhile, in the face of pandemic, they are there to contribute a little of their time – to serve meals, provide shelter and bring rays of hope to those who have a much heavier role.

Garbage collectors

Everyday’s an encounter with

Mountains of wastes

Some up for recycling,

Some for indefinite rests

Our garbage collectors

Brave to face this much of a challenge

Though virus might just be meters away their faces

But stepping forward, they took the risk.

From our homes to establishments to hospitals, our garbage collectors are here to make sure that we have a clean, safe and healthy environment!

With this war, you are our shields

From day 1 of the battle we felt just as protected

With your hands we felt the loving embrace

Seeping through our safety gears

We wish you lots of strength, too!

No matter what role we are taking or how hazardous the risk we’re facing, we know that we are just moving forward – guided by a common vision and that is to overcome this storm as soon as possible. Happy National Heroes’ Day to all!/PN
