MANILA – Western Visayan applicant and professional boxers may avail themselves of free medical tests, based on an agreement between the Department of Health and the Games and Amusement Board (GAB).
This service is offered at the Western Visayas Medical Center in Mandurriao, Iloilo City and the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod City, according to GAB chairman Abraham “Baham” Mitra.
“The agreement aims to ensure the overall health and welfare of professional Filipino boxers,” he said. “Since we know that medical examinations are costly, we have sought the assistance of [the Health department] to make them free for our boxers.”
Professional boxers are required to undergo and pass a complete medical examination administered by GAB licensed physicians prior to the approval or renewal of their licenses, said Mitra.
Among such free services are medical and neurological exams, neurophysiological exam (every three years), chest X-ray, electrocardiogram (12 lead with strip tracing), plus Hepatitis B testing, drug testing for marijuana and methamphetamine, CT Scan or MRI with MRA (magnetic resonance angiography), complete blood count test, urinalysis, electroencephalogram (or EEG), and serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase test.
Additional requirements for fighters competing in world championship fights covered by the agreement include HIV and Hepatitis C screening, eye examination, and neurological clearance.
Only the boxers – not including their dependents, as proposed at the GAB Convention in May in Davao City – may avail themselves of the free service, Mitra clarified./PN
