MANILA – Rep. Jerry Treñas (Iloilo City) appealed to President Rodrigo Duterte to give Negros Island Region “a chance to prove its worth.”
Duterte was set to abolish the one-island region due to budget constraints, according to Malacañang and Cabinet officials.
“The two provinces (Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental) have tried their best to organize the region,” Treñas told Panay News. “Perhaps [they] should be given a chance to prove the region is worthy of support.”
Treñas is the chairman of the Visayan bloc and a member of the Special Committee on Visayas Development in the House of Representatives.
He disagreed with Budget secretary Benjamin Diokno, who said the national government will not spend P19 billion for a two-province region.
No budget had been allotted for the region in the 2016 and 2017 General Appropriations Acts, Diokno had said.
According to Treñas, the amount for Personal Services, among other items, is already in the budgets for Western Visayas and Central Visayas.
Negros Occidental previously belonged to Western Visayas, while Negros Oriental was under Central Visayas.
