KALIBO, Aklan – Sangguniang Bayan (SB) members want to prohibit carrying beverage in glass containers on the streets during the Ati-Atihan Festival.
Phillip Kimpo, Buen Joy French Villanueva and Daisy Briones proposed a municipal ordinance seeking the ban.
The SB committees on tourism, laws, and peace and order held a public hearing on the proposal Monday, Dec. 12.
Twelve cases of physical harm caused by glass bottle-throwing incidents were recorded during the Ati-Atihan in January this year, Chief Inspector Terence Paul Sta. Ana, municipal police chief, disclosed.
Most of them happened during procession and in festival zones on the last three days of the celebration, he said.
While sale and consumption of bottled drinks, including alcoholic beverage, are allowed, customers are not allowed to bring the products outside the establishments and to the streets, especially during merrymaking, or sadsad, the ordinance said.
Restaurants, hotels and stores are allowed to sell alcoholic products but are advised to encourage customers to consume them “in private,” said the ordinance.
The festival’s 2017 edition was set from Jan. 6 to 15.
Meanwhile festival organizer Kalibo Sto. Niño Ati-Atihan Foundation, Inc. and the local government will retain the “no bottled drinks” policy during the Hala Bira! Ati-Atihan Nights at the Kalibo Magsaysay Park.
Police are also banning weapons of any kind during the weeklong festivity. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
