ILOILO – Local government units (LGUs) in Western Visayas were reminded to comply with the solid waste management law by closing their open dumpsites and converting them into sanitary landfills.
The Environmental Ombudsman will investigate another batch of LGUs regarding their compliance with the law, the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) Region 6 warned.
Regional Director Jonathan Bulos said they have written all LGUs in the region about the issue.
Six LGUs in Western Visayas were investigated for their alleged noncompliance with Republic Act 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act.
They were the municipalities of Ajuy, Santa Barbara, Sara, Banate, and Concepcion in this province, and Nabas in Aklan.
Only 50 percent of LGUs in the region are compliant with the law, Bulos disclosed.
The EMB has also reported the status of open dumpsites across the region to the National Solid Waste Management Commission, he said.
“We do not want more local government units to face investigation for [allegedly] violating the law,” stressed Bulos.
He revealed that the EMB shelled out P400,000 in financial assistance to 11 municipalities for the establishment of material recovery facilities in line with their solid waste management program. (PNA)
