KALIBO, Aklan – Two overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), including an Akeanon, have been languishing in a jail in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for two weeks now.
Kagawad Dyna Zaradulla-Quismundo of Barangay Alas-as, Madalag town, said one of the OFWs, Bernie Zaradulla, is her brother.
Quismundo identified the other OFW only as Ryan Delos Santos Duya.
Zaradulla and Duya were detained at the Jawasat Deportation Jail Alfaisalya 91 Dammam for allegedly failing to pay debts they incurred from their employer.
Quismundo said they are appealing for the national government to help work for the release of the two OFWs.
According to Quismundo, she wrote Sen. Cynthia Villar about the plight of the two.
A copy of the letter was obtained by the Philippine News Agency.
“Both Zaradulla and Duya were supposed to come home after they reported to the Philippine Overseas Labor Office because they were unpaid for three months by their employer,” read part of the letter.
“The employer had been charging them certain fees, but they will not pay since they do not have any loan or obligation,” the letter read.
Villar is the chairwoman of the Senate committee on overseas Filipino workers.
“I hope the national government can help speed up the release of my brother and his companion,” said Quismundo. (PNA)
