Representatives Alfredo Abelardo “Albee” Benitez (Negros Occidental, 3rd District) and Greg Gasataya (Bacolod City) want a coastal road that will snake through four cities and a town built in Negros Occidental.
The 35.85-kilometer coastal road will cover Bacolod, Silay, Talisay, and Victorias cities and the municipality of E.B. Magalona.
It shall “facilitate the efficient flow of people and goods in the area, catalyzing economic development and generating employment opportunities and new sources of income,” stated House Bill No. 5237.
The road shall also help ease traffic congestion on North Road here and mitigate perennial flooding in the covered areas.
“Infrastructure plays a crucial role in enabling and sustaining economic growth,” the bill Benitez and Gasataya authored. “Recognizing this, President Rodrigo Duterte and his economic team have included the acceleration of infrastructure development as one of its top economic priorities.”
“Accordingly,” the bill added, “[such coastal road] will harness the vast economic potential of the province of Negros Occidental and contribute in improving the quality of life of Negrenses.”
Gasataya hopes deliberation on the bill, filed on March 13, starts as soon as House of Representatives sessions resume.
The Department of Public Works and Highways already started a study on the feasibility and viability of the project. The budget may only be estimated once the study is completed, said Gasataya./PN
