ROXAS City –The number of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) in this capital city has increased, according to the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) committee on health.
Councilor Cesar Yap Jr., chairman of the SP health committee, said the records from the City Health Office (CHO) recorded 155 HIV and AIDS cases in 2017, higher compared to 75 cases in 2016 and 65 cases in 2015.
“I am coming up with an ordinance creating the Roxas City HIV and AIDS Council. [The ordinance] will also create a technical working group which will also help in mitigating the problem,” Yap said.
But the increased number of HIV and AIDS cases in the city may also mean that the awareness campaign of the CHO is effective, Yap added.
The increasing trend of recorded cases of HIV and AIDS may mean that people in the city are getting tested.
Yap said the social networking mobile app Grindr is one of the factors of the rising number of HIV and AIDS in the city.
Grindr is geared toward gay and bisexual men. It is designed to help them meet other users in a certain area.
Yap said plenty of young people are using the app.
In Capiz, there are already six recorded cases of death due to HIV and AIDS. One of them was a female./PN
