BORACAY – A tricycle driver found P25,000 cash and returned it to the owner. He has earned praises — and a resort accommodation — for his honesty.

Wilfredo Sauza did not think twice before turning over the money to a local radio station.

The owner was Martin Jickain, a model turned chef and businessman.

Jickain accidentally dropped the bundle of cash inside a plastic bag while on board a golf cart.

Sauza — a native of Barangay Calamcam, Libacao, Aklan but residing in Sitio Hagdan, Barangay Yapak — found the money on the road on Feb. 6.

He and his two passengers went straight to Yes FM Boracay to seek assistance.

Hindi ko binilang ang pera dahil kaagad dumiretso kami sa radio station sa Balabag (I didn’t count the money anymore. We went straight to the radio station in Barangay Balabag),” he said.

Sauza said Jickain gave him a two-night resort accommodation in appreciation of his honesty.

The 48-year-old driver went to the island resort in the early ’90s to drive habal-habal (motorcycle) and work as a bartender to support his wife and three children.

Namamasada ako ngayon ng traysikel (Right now I am driving a tricycle),” he said. “Dati naman may mga gamit, tulad ng mga cell phones at papeles ng lupa, na isinasauli ko sa mga may-ari (I have previously found other missing items, including cell phones and land titles, all of which I returned to the owners).”

Sauza hopes his fellow tricycle drivers and others would do the same. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
