SAN JOSE, Antique – The province of Antique has experienced a boost in its tourism industry in 2017 with tourist arrivals rising to almost 1.5 million.
Provincial Tourism Officer Ramlu Villaluna said the number of visits in the province tripled this year from 2016’s 448,101 visits.
Villaluna attributed this to the discovery of “natural wonders” in the province and promotions through the “Experience Antique” website.
The website shows pictures and descriptions of the province’s tourist destinations to attract domestic and foreign tourists.
“We have the official website that is being visited by more than 10,000 people who also share to their friends what we have posted there. Most of them are millennials,” Villaluna said.
Tourists frequent the northern part of the province, like the town of Sebaste where the Kalamasag Falls, Igpasungaw Falls and Bugtong Bukid are located.
The towns of Libertad, Pandan, Tibiao, and Culasi are also receiving the “spill-over” of visitors from Boracay Island in Malay, Aklan, Villaluna said.
He added that the province’s hosting of Palarong Pambansa on April 23 to 29 and the Western Visayas Regional State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association meet on Dec. 3 to 8 also contributed to the local tourism boom.
“We had thousands of visitors who came for the sports events and they had their side trips to our different destinations,” Villaluna said. (PNA/PN)
