ILOILO City – The Archdiocese of Jaro has declared all its churches structurally sound following a wave of recent earthquakes, even as it shifts focus toward strengthening disaster preparedness across its parishes.
Reverend Father Angelo Colada, spokesperson and director of the Archdiocese’s Social Communication Office, said inspection results showed no structural damage to any of the churches under its jurisdiction, including the historic Jaro Cathedral.
“So far, we have not gathered any reports indicating problems with our churches or structures after sang earthquake, buot silingon okay man,” Fr. Colada said.
“Our inspections reveal that the Jaro Cathedral, along with our century-old churches, remains secure and in good condition. We closely monitored these facilities, and there has been no indication of structural concerns following the recent earthquakes,” he added.
Archbishop of Jaro issued a directive for a comprehensive review of all ecclesiastical buildings after the tremors, which included the magnitude 6.9 quake in Bogo City, Cebu on Sept. 30; the 7.4 magnitude offshore quake near Manay, Davao Oriental on Oct. 10; and the 4.4 magnitude tremor in Guimbal, Iloilo.
“The findings confirm that all our churches are structurally sound, which is a relief for our community,” Fr. Colada stressed.
“The safety of our congregants is paramount, especially with Sunday services, and we are committed to maintaining that safety. So far, okay man kag safe for all religious people, for gatherings especially kon Sundays.”
Strengthening Preparedness
While the inspection results are reassuring, Fr. Colada said the Archdiocese is not becoming complacent. It has begun working closely with government disaster agencies to conduct earthquake drills and disseminate safety information across parishes.
“We are collaborating with government agencies that specialize in disaster preparedness to facilitate earthquake drills and provide critical information on safety measures. It is essential that our parishioners are well-prepared and informed on how to respond during calamities,” he said.
To reinforce public awareness, the Archdiocese has integrated earthquake safety reminders into homilies and parish announcements.
“We actively include guidance on what to do during an earthquake and the necessary preparations, emphasizing the importance of safety for all,” Fr. Colada said, adding, “Gina pa include and integrate man naton sa aton homilies and announcements.”
Extending Compassion
Beyond ensuring safety, the Archdiocese has also mobilized aid for earthquake victims in Cebu through fundraising efforts initiated across parishes.
“We have successfully gathered funds to provide assistance to those impacted by the earthquake. Our hearts go out to the victims in Cebu, and we encourage our congregation to contribute to these efforts,” Fr. Colada confirmed.
