ILOILO — With thousands of travelers expected to return to their hometowns for New Year celebrations, authorities in Iloilo issued a set of long-ride safety tips aimed at preventing road accidents, travel delays, and other emergencies during the holiday rush.
The Iloilo Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), in coordination with the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO), released advisories urging motorists and commuters to prioritize preparedness and caution, particularly amid unpredictable weather conditions.
The PDRRMO outlined seven key safety guidelines for long-distance travel, emphasizing the importance of planning and vigilance. Travelers were advised to check weather forecasts before departing, monitor weather updates regularly, and avoid traveling during severe weather conditions such as heavy rain, strong winds, and low visibility.
Motorists were also encouraged to plan alternate routes and rest stops in case of sudden weather changes, drive at reduced speeds on wet roads, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. Ensuring vehicle readiness — including tires, brakes, lights, and wipers — was also stressed, along with keeping emergency kits containing flashlights, first-aid supplies, and rain gear.
“Be alert and attentive at all times. A safe journey starts with proper preparation,” the PDRRMO said in its advisory.
Meanwhile, the IPPO issued complementary road safety reminders, highlighting that road accidents can be prevented through collective responsibility and discipline among road users.
Police urged drivers to ensure they are physically and mentally fit before driving and to strictly avoid alcohol consumption. The IPPO reiterated the importance of vehicle inspection using the “BLOWBAGETS” checklist, which covers brakes, lights, oil, water, battery, air, gas, engine, tires, and self-readiness.
Authorities also reminded motorists to avoid overspeeding and road rage, stressing the need to remain calm and composed while driving. Compliance with traffic laws and regulations was likewise emphasized as essential to road safety.
“Remain alert at all times to prevent accidents,” the IPPO said.
