Iloilo provincial civil defense group mulled

ILOILO – The provincial government plans to form a “provincial civil defense group” that will serve as responders during emergencies and disasters.

Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. wants the provincial guards to make up the core of this group.

“We will revive, improve and step up our provincial guards by providing them training on disaster response,” he said yesterday.

They will not only serve as security personnel at the provincial capitol, stressed Defensor.

For the budget support and requirement for this provincial civil defense group, he will be conferring with the Provincial Budget Office, Provincial Accounting Office, General Services Office, Human Resource Management and Development Office, and the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).

According to PDRRMO chief Dr. Jerry Bionat, provincial civil defense group personnel must know basic life support and first aid.

They must know, too, how to move and transport patients and how to swim, Bionat added.

Defensor said he would also seek the help of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.

Also yesterday, the provincial government recognized its Emergency Responders of Iloilo (e-ROI) for services rendered during the Dinagyang Festival 2020.

They received the first ever “Scout Roy Commendation” from Defensor and PDRRMO chief Dr. Jerry Bionat.

The commendation was named after Roy Babas, a 12-year-old Boy Scout hero from Estancia, Iloilo.

Babas, a Grade 6 pupil, died saving seven persons during an accident at the Estancia port on Jan. 24, 1971. (With a report from Louine Hope Conserva, Capitol News/PN)
