Iloilo Royals mauls Marikina squad in Maharlika caging

MANILA – Iloilo United Royals got its acts together in the fourth quarter and cruised to a 70-55 victory over Marikina Shoemasters in the 2019-2020 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League at the Bataan People’s Center.

After seeing its early advantage turn to a 48-45 deficit early in the fourth, the Royals leaned on three straight baskets from Rodel de Leon, Michael Javelosa and Donald Gumaru to tie the score at 50-all on Thursday.

De Leon then scored back-to-back inside hits and a triple, and another shot from Aaron Jeruta for a 59-50 Royals edge.

It grew further to its largest of 15 points after a triple by Erick Rodriguez and free throws by Richard Escoto.

De Leon finished the match with 14 points, with nine coming in the final quarter, while Escoto and Jeruta contributed 13 and 11 points, respectively.

The Royals improved to a 6-4 slate.

Javelosa also made his presence felt for the expansion team Royals. He contributed 11 rebounds to go along with three points, two blocks and two steals.

Yvez Sazon top-scored with 15 points, five rebounds and two steals, while former PBA cager Jondan Salvador tallied 16 rebounds but struggled offensively with just two points for the 1-9 Shoemasters.
