ILOILO City – Reshaping the Dinagyang Festival, organizers of the event’s 2026 edition are moving one of the main judging areas of the Tribes Competition to the Iloilo Sports Complex in La Paz district — the most significant venue shift in years — to accommodate surging crowd numbers and unclog the long-congested downtown during Iloilo City’s biggest annual celebration.
The Iloilo Festivals Foundation, Inc. (IFFI) announced that the Iloilo Sports Complex will serve as one of two judging areas, while the Iloilo Freedom Grandstand in the City Proper district will remain the primary site.
Festival Director Prof. Eric Divinagracia said the decision followed months of assessment and was driven by public demand for more comfortable, accessible viewing spaces.
“Year after year, we hear the same request — people want a venue where more can watch comfortably,” he said. “The Sports Complex gives us that space. It allows us to elevate the audience experience without compromising safety and mobility.”
Traffic relief a major driver
Divinagracia said organizers also sought to address long-standing congestion problems in the City Proper, where road closures and ingress for performers choke traffic for days.
“For several years, the downtown area suffered from heavy traffic because of ingress and week-long blockings,” he noted. “By transferring one venue to the Sports Complex, we are giving the city center some breathing room.”
Lower ticket prices, afternoon performances
To ensure wider public access, IFFI is slashing ticket prices to P500 — a rare fee reduction for a premier Dinagyang event.
“Gusto naton mas madamo gid ang maka-afford kag makalantaw. The festival belongs to the people,” Divinagracia said.
Another major adjustment: the tribes competition will shift from its traditional morning schedule to an afternoon staging, following strong appeals from participating groups.
“The tribes themselves told us they perform better and prepare better in the afternoon,” he said. “We listen to them because they are the heart of Dinagyang.”
More changes expected
IFFI said it is finalizing all adjustments for Dinagyang 2026 and emphasized that public feedback remains central to its planning.
“Dinagyang thrives because we listen — to spectators, to performers, to the community,” Divinagracia stressed. “These changes are part of our commitment to make Dinagyang 2026 bigger, better, and more responsive to what Iloilo wants./PN
