BACOLOD City – The Sangguniang Panlungsod requested the Department of Budget and Management to include the Negros Island Region (NIR) in the 2018 national budget.
NIR has been operating without its own budget since its creation in 2015, the city council said in a resolution.
Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental have been getting allocations from their erstwhile regions 6 (Western Visayas) and 7 (Central Visayas), respectively.
Including NIR in the proposed budget will “largely help in the development of the Negros provinces,” said Councilor Renecito Novero, resolution author.
Department of the Interior and Local Government undersecretary Jesus Hinlo confirmed that the proposed 2018 national budget did not have an allocation for the island region.
Negros Occidental is the No. 3 richest province in the Philippines in terms of assets, Hinlo said./PN
