Novero pushes for more ‘expansive’ program
BACOLOD City – Councilor Renecito Novero wants to amend the ordinance creating the city’s scholarship program.
City Ordinance (CO) 386 amended CO 102 series of 1993, or the Bacolod City Scholarship Program.
Novero authored a proposal once again amending the city’s scholarship program.
On Jan. 26, he conducted a public hearing regarding this.
Novero wants to make the scholarship program more “expansive” by increasing the financial assistance from P10,000 to P12,000.
This is only the minimum amount, Novero said.
The maximum amount – which has no fixed rate – given to scholars will be under the discretion of the city mayor, he added.
Novero said the idea of amending the scholarship program was a suggestion of Anjo Ayco, head of the Public Employment Service Office (PESO).
He added that raising the stipend is reasonable considering that the prices of commodities nowadays are also increasing.
The financial assistance is given to city scholars in the tertiary level including those taking their post-graduate courses who are enrolled in public or private schools.
Citing PESO records, Novero said the city now has about 200 scholars.
These scholars are residents of Bacolod and from families with low monthly income, Novero added./PN
